THE REMMEN FOUNDATION ART PRIZE
2021
In connection with Art Week Copenhagen, the Remmen Foundation Art Prize of DKK 100,000 was awarded for the sixth year at Hotel d’Angleterre.
The Art Foundation’s jury consists of art collectors Arne Wulff and Barbara Husted Werner, visual artists Bjørn Nørgaard and Søren Sejr, Dean Sanne Kofod Olsen and Board Member Mette Remmen.
This year the jury nominated five artists working with everything from steel installations, ceramics, painting and light art to virtual reality.
The art prize of DKK 100,000 was awarded to the 35-year-old painter Ahmad Siyar Qasimi, and justified with the words:
“In recent decades, painting as an art form has, against all predictions, gained widespread popularity – even among younger artists. In particular, figurative paintings – often with narrative and allegorical elements – and with references to the political, private and symbolic have made their mark in recent years.
This year’s winner joins this tradition, with figurative tableaux that depict the human condition in a distinctive social poetic imagery – almost like ‘breaking news’. Through his painterly technique, a kind of pointillism, he gives the subjects a strange dreamlike surreal expression, transforming breaking news into a universal poetic expression; it is man at all times”.
Since 2015, the Art Prize has been awarded to a young and promising artist – selected and nominated by the Foundation’s Art Committee – so it is not possible to apply for this prize.
The Remmen Foundation congratulates Ahmad Siyar Qasimi on receiving the Art Prize 2021.
